Job hunting can take time. Rather than only waiting for replies, use the time to build skills that make your next application stronger. Many options are low-cost or free.
Improve your computer skills
Almost every job now involves some computer work. Being comfortable with email, word processing and spreadsheets is a real advantage. Free online tutorials can teach you the basics of Microsoft Word, Excel and Google Workspace. Practise by creating a budget spreadsheet or formatting your own CV.
Take a short course
Fiji’s tertiary institutions, including the Fiji National University (FNU) and The University of the South Pacific (USP), and various training providers offer certificate and short courses in areas such as first aid, customer service, hospitality, trades and business. Check their websites for current intakes. If you are planning longer study, look into what financial assistance is available through the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Service (TSLS).
Volunteer in your community
Volunteering with your church, a youth group, a sports club or a non-government organisation builds teamwork, leadership and communication skills. It also gives you real examples to talk about in interviews, and people who can act as referees.
Learn from free online courses
Reputable online learning platforms offer free courses in topics such as digital marketing, bookkeeping, project management and coding. Even if a certificate is not formally recognised, completing a course shows initiative, and you can list it on your CV under professional development.
Get your licences and clearances ready
Many jobs ask for a valid driver’s licence or a police clearance. Getting these sorted early means you can apply immediately when the right job appears.
Practise your communication skills
Read widely, write regularly and practise speaking confidently. Reading news articles, writing short summaries and practising interview answers with a friend are simple ways to improve.
Network
Let friends, family and former teachers know what kind of work you are looking for. Many opportunities are shared by word of mouth before they are widely advertised.
Keep checking eJobsFiji for new vacancies, and update your CV each time you learn something new.
