For Employers: How to Write a Job Advert That Attracts the Right Candidates

A clear, well-written job advert saves time for everyone. It attracts suitable applicants, discourages people who do not meet the requirements, and reflects well on your business. Here is a simple approach for employers advertising in Fiji.

1. Use a clear, specific job title

Use the title job seekers actually search for. “Accounts Assistant” or “Heavy Truck Driver” will be found more easily than an internal title like “Officer Grade 3”.

2. Introduce your organisation

In two or three sentences, explain who you are, what you do and where you are based. Candidates want to know who they would be working for, and a genuine description builds trust. Avoid leaving template text in your advert. Candidates notice and it makes the listing look unfinished.

3. Describe the role honestly

List the main duties in five to eight bullet points. Be realistic. If the role involves shift work, weekends, travel or physical work, say so upfront.

4. Separate essential and desirable requirements

Make it clear which qualifications, licences or experience are essential and which are a bonus. Long lists of “must haves” can discourage capable candidates, especially women and younger applicants, who may not apply unless they meet every point.

5. Mention what you offer

Salary range, training opportunities, allowances, transport, meals, accommodation or career progression all help your advert stand out. Even a pay range attracts more suitable applicants than “salary negotiable”.

6. Give clear application instructions

  • How to apply, by email, online or in person
  • Which documents to include
  • Any subject line or reference number to use
  • The closing date

7. Keep it accurate and up to date

Use a real closing date and remove or update the advert once the position is filled. Out-of-date listings frustrate job seekers and waste your time with late applications.

8. Respect equal opportunity

Focus on the skills and experience needed for the job, rather than personal characteristics that are not relevant to the role.
